What is Urodynamics Studies (UDS)?
UDS test how well the bladder, sphincters, and urethra hold and release urine. These tests can show how well the bladder works and why there could be leaks or blockages.
There are many types of urodynamic tests. A health care provider may recommend one or more based on your symptoms, but they are typically performed together as one test.
Why Would I Need UDS test?
Urodynamics help find the cause of problems related to:
-
Incontinence - urine leaks/controlling your urine
-
Bladder not emptying all the way
-
Overactive bladder - the need to go too often
-
Urgency - the need to go suddenly
-
Weak urine flow
-
Urine flow stopping and starting ("intermittent")
-
Frequent urinary tract infections (UTI)
What is a cystometry?
A cystometrogram or cystometry, with a pressure flow study is part of urodynamic testing. These tests measure how well the bladder functions. They help diagnose problems related to urine control. These can be incontinence, difficulty emptying the bladder, overactive bladder, obstructions or frequent infections.
Cystometry is used to measure how much urine the bladder can hold. It also measures pressure inside the bladder, and how full it is when you have the urge to go.
What is Ultrasound Imaging?
An ultrasound exam is a painless diagnostic technique that makes use of how sound waves travel through the body. When sound waves pass through the body, they bounce off tissues and organs in certain ways. The reflected waves are used to make images of the organs inside. The sound waves do not hurt the body, and there is no radiation.
